Auction Focus - Van Olst Sales, KING LEATHERDALE O

26KingLeatherdaleO-Draffoto-web-van-olst-sales-414x276.jpg

Lovely modern type, easy off the ground with nice round and strong hindlegs.

King Leatherdale O is a stunning Lord Leatherdale-son. He reacts attentively to his rider’s aids. His sensitivity means that he is suitable for the more experienced rider. King Leatherdale O’s dressage talent is no coincidence, as proven by his dam Vinesse. She is competing at Z2-level dressage just as Businessman, by Vivaldi, and Cinderella, by Vivaldi, who are both out of the same mother. Granddam Kimberley, by Wolfgang, is the mother of four horses competing at Z-level dressage or higher and grandmother of the KWPN-approved Ferdinand, by Vivaldi, five Z-level horses and two Small Tour-level horses.

FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final 2018: Pirouetting to Paris for the Final showdown - bring it on!!

Show-stealer, Sweden's Patrik Kittel, celebrates with fans after his victory in the fifth leg of the FEI World Cup™ Dressage 2018 Western European League at Olympia, London (GBR) in December. He joins 17 other qualified riders, from all around the globe, at the 2018 series in Paris (FRA) where the action takes place from 11 to 15 April.  (FEI/Jon Stroud)

Paris, the City of Lights, will welcome 18 horse-and-rider combinations from all around the globe for the 33rd FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final in two weeks time, but can any of them stop Isabell Werth from winning her fourth title?

The 2018 Final looks set to be a superb piece of sporting theatre, with a fascinating cast of players and the prospect of a whole series of electrifying performances when the curtain is raised at the AccorHotels Arena in the French capital city.

Put together Sweden’s Patrik Kittel (41), Mr Entertainment himself, whose infectious exuberance saw him give almost the entire audience a celebratory “high five” after his brilliant victory at Olympia in London (GBR) last December, the Netherlands’ Edward Gal (48) whose stunning stallion Glock’s Zonik has been attracting gasps of delight over the winter months, and America’s Laura Graves (30) who is likely to give the defending champion a real run for her money.

Add into the mix a host of other contenders including the intriguing Ellesse Tzingberg (26) who recovered from a life-threatening car crash, was discovered in Paris by a modelling agency, traded the catwalk for the Dressage arena and is the first-ever athlete to represent The Philippines at the Final, and top it off with the one they all have to beat, the incredible Isabell Werth (48) from Germany who is on yet another roll right now, and you have all the ingredients for a blockbuster!

It has been an amazing qualifying season filled with exciting newcomers, old favourites, big clashes and some magical moments. Now it’s down to the wire, with 18 horse-and-rider combinations from 13 countries chasing down the 2018 title. The 33rd FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final is going to be a classic...

For Werth, the number one rider in the World Rankings and the most medalled athlete in the history of equestrian sport, it might all look like a walk in the park as she heads to this year’s finale. But that’s not her style. She takes nothing for granted, and throughout the entire Western European League series she has celebrated every one of her four victories like it was her very first.

It was with her top ride, the fabulous mare Weihegold OLD, that she claimed the title for only the third time in her sparkling career in Omaha (USA) 12 months ago where she pinned Graves and Verdades into runner-up spot. The American rider posted a personal-best Grand Prix Freestyle score of 85.307 that day, while Werth’s winning mark was a massive 90.704, but Graves demonstrated the increasing threat she poses when turning the tables in the Grand Prix Special in Aachen (GER) three months later where the crack German duo had to settle for second spot.

Graves wasn’t on hand when Werth swept all before her at the Longines FEI European Championships 2017 in Gothenburg (SWE) a month later. It was Werth’s team-mate Sönke Rothenberger who put her under the greatest pressure that week, and he paid the doyenne of Dressage the highest compliment when he pushed her to the absolute maximum but she still managed to find that extra edge.

“This is what Isabell is so good at, producing her very best on the day, on the spot, when she really needs it!” he said.

If her opponents have their way, this phenomenal sportswoman may need to do it all again – and more – in Paris. But as Werth said after claiming all gold in Gothenburg last summer, “it’s good for our sport that they are all trying to beat me. The harder they try, the better I have to be. Bring it on!”

Gertjan van Olst: “Our youngstock is the talent pool for the auction”

gertjan-vanolst-sales.jpg

Forty or so top-level ridden horses will go under the hammer during the enervating young dressage horse auction ‘Van Olst Sales’ on 30th March. How does such an auction collection come about? We put the question to the driving force behind Van Olst Horses, owner Gertjan van Olst.

Own breeding pool
Owner Gertjan van Olst: "Our business consists of the stud, sport, sales, breeding and for a large part youngstock. All mainly specialised in dressage horses. Together these links form a circle. The stud, for example, is very important but we also benefit from good youngstock. Our youngstock is actually the breeding pool from which we get the talent, certainly for the auction too.”

Win-win situation
“With our system we create a win-win situation. Each year we buy back around one hundred foals from a set group of breeders. As well as these, we also have the 10 to 20 foals that we breed ourselves each year. These all go into our own youngstock, to be sold on as three-year-olds after they have been trained by us. The idea is to be able to get one or two approved stallions out of our breeding pool. The very best horses in the group are selected for the Van Olst Sales. The auction is the sales opportunity of the year and is also the last link in our circle: we buy the horses as foals and sell them at the auction with a great future ahead of them.”

Strict selection
“Over the years, dressage horse breeding has made a tremendous leap. That is reflected in the quality of our horses; this has increased tremendously. The increase in quality comes from two sides: breeding has certainly grown, but we too have also set the bar higher. We now select the horses even more consciously. Only the top horses are selected for the Van Olst Sales.”

Exceptionally strong collection
“The Van Olst Sales collection is particularly strong. Take for example our own-bred King Kong. This Glamourdale-son is out of our own mare Sugonda. She also produced the Grand Prix horse Zhidane, who is competing at international-level with my wife (Anne van Olst, red.) Taikoen (by Negro) is also from this bloodline. Van Kingsley (by George Clooney) will also attract attention I expect. This own-bred product is out of Cinderella. This mare scored exceptionally well in the IBOP gradings as a three- and four-year-old. His half-sister is the talented mare Nessah (by Nespresso); a big mare with tremendous expression. Both Kingsley and Nessah are the result of embryo transplants and are very interesting horses.”

Wide distribution
“Each year international interest in the auction increases. During the last edition a couple of the most expensive horses went to good clients in Australia. We also sell to America, Japan, UK, Scandinavia, Germany and France. We have a wide distribution area. Yet I really like it when a lot of quality also remains in the Netherlands”, says Gertjan.

Impressive placement for Danish Daniel Bachmann Andersen in today´s tough CDI4 Grand Prix Special

IMG_3075.jpeg

The least experienced today was the 10-year-old gelding Blue Hors Zepter by Blue Hors Zack / Wolkentanz II with Danish Daniel Bachmann Andersen in the saddle, and they showed why you have to watch out for them for the future. It was their just 2nd international Grand Prix (debut at CDI2 in Herning last October) and their debut at Grand Prix Special at international level (and 2nd Grand Prix Special ever).

Ending up as no 3 with just Desperados and Dante Weltino in front, and at the same time being placed 2nd by the German jugde at B, Katrina Wuest with impressive 75,532% just shows their qualities.

For Daniel Bachmann the 10-year-old Zepter is also fully his "own" product, as Daniel has been responsible for Zepters entire education from youngster towards Grand Prix, and Daniel is of course also very pleased about Zepters development and qualities, and at the same time Zepter is very focused about his job in the arena. Zepter is a horse with 3 gaits + the two extra "gaits" piaffe and passage, combined with super nice angles and natural and very regular power. All the way shown in a nice and very steady frame with good and happy expression.

With Danish "glasses" this is another very exciting combination for the future, and with just 10 years, 2020 Tokyo Olympics is for sure a very exciting goal. But for now Daniel is getting ready for the World Cup final with his 14-year-old KWPN stallion Blue Hors Zack, and at the same time Daniel has just showed Blue Hors Don Olymbrio back in great form for the recent CDI3 at Herning, Denmark.

H2R comments during their test:

Blue Hors Zepter DEN - good halt, nice forward, good extended trot, nice swing balance half pass right, good transition to passage, expressive passage, super power half pass to right, very nice in and out of extensions, good walk tour, good 1st piaffe at the spot, super sit 2nd piaffe at the spot, bit tense passage, nice transition to canter, good zig-zag canter, nice series, good extended canter with nice collection before change, bit unbalanced pirouettes, small tensions for one times, good extended trot at long side, smooth transitions and very nice final centerline.

Desperados FRH and Dante Weltino OLD

Canter pirouettes were today´s highlight from Desperados.

Desperados GER - open halt, bit unbalanced hind for extended trot, active half pass, lost bit passage out of corner (short like piaffe steps), nice flow half pass right, could be a bit sharper on the letters for transitions between passage/extended trot, good walk, good 1st piaffe, small disturb before 2nd piaffe, nice canter half passes, nice series, superb control / quality for both pirouettes, nice 1 times, some uneven passage steps at centerline, nice piaffe.

The easy and light contact just gives the WOW effect by Dante and Therese, and today a much more "rideable" Dante.

Dante Weltino OLD SWE - open halt, expressive power diagonal, nice swing half pass to right, nice transition to passage and lovely swing, power half pass, a few moments a bit quicker in right hind for passage, could stretch a bit more for extended walk, small tensions for 1st piaffe, easy 2nd piaffe with nice transition, good transition to canter, good half passes, smooth series, nice extended canter, super sit balance for pirouettes, power extended trot, nice final centerline.

Descriptions from the 10-day observation test March 2018 - Danish Warmblood

Ferrari OLD now also licensed for Danish Warmblood - photo credit: H2R

As a lot of the stallions from Danish Warmblood licensing attracts a lot of interest from abroad, you can now also find the descriptions in English.

You can find descriptions of all stallions for 10-day observation test here, including final approval of the 6 year old Ferrari OLD.

About the 10-day observation test

This test is held in the spring right after the Danish Warmblood Stallion Show and is an observation test lasting 10 days. The test is open to young colts approved for testing and approved 4-year-olds that have not passed a performance test before.

In the test period the colts are exercised lightly in accordance with acknowledged principles of educating young riding horses.

The stallions are observed for stereotypics during handling and general management in the stable.

The exercise includes riding but not jumping under saddle.

No scores are given and there is no final test. The breeding commission and the station test manager decide in concert which colts have passed the test successfully. The breeding commission follows the colts at the day of arrival, a few of the days during the test and on the last day of the test.

After the test a description of each young breedsire prospect is written.

The purpose of the observation test is to filter the stallions with bad temper or other for breedsires undesirable characteristics. The young colts that have passed the 10-day observation test are given permission to cover within the same year.

Desperados and Kristina Bröring-Sprehe with come-back victory at CDI4 Grand Prix in Dortmund (video)

Lovely to see Desperados back in the arena, and together with Kristina Bröring-Sprehe they provided a really good test.

H2R comments during their test:

Desperados GER - not square halt, small unbalance hind for extended trot, good half passes, good halt bit tense rein back, bit tense hind for passage, active 1st piaffe, could stretch bit more for extended walk, good collected walk, small unbalance into passage, very nice 2nd piaffe, passage bit unbalanced hind, good 2 times, strong extended canter but lack more collection before change, good zig-zag, good 1 times, super control for both pirouettes, nice transition to trot, want to start final piaffe very early but Kristina manage to keep on, good piaffe at X.

79,739% still seems to be a very generous scoring - but agreed by all 5 judges.

2nd place for Inessa Merkulova with Mister X - they arrive for Dortmund with 2 victories from their last competition at Herning, Denmark.

Dante Weltino OLD and Therese Nilshagen scored 71,804% and from "outside" Dante looked a bit touchy today which also gave a some issues during their test.

H2R comments:

Dante Weltino OLD SWE - nice halt but very short time, power expressive diagonal, super balance, smooth half passes, good halt bit tense rein back, good passage, bit early 1st piaffe, good transitions, bit tense extended walk, need more let go, bit tense collected walk, starts small steps before M, 2nd piaffe lack bit more forward search, bit swing 2 times lovely off the ground, superb extended canter, bit unbalanced zig-zag, nice 1 times, super sit for both pirouettes and nice control, small lack of balance for extended trot, good final but stops a few meters before final halt.

Danish Daniel Bachmann Andersen and his just 10 year old Blue Hors Zepter did an over all really nice test, with just a single error by the transition from passage to canter. They finished as no 8 with 70,913%.

Daniel told H2R after his test today: "It is a bit difficult arena to enter, but at the same time a very nice place to learn your horse to cope with the competition invironment, and Blue Hors Zepter has still a lot to learn."

H2R comments during the test:

Blue Hors Zepter DEN - bit tense halt, good power for diagonal, active half passes could show bit more carriage, nice halt rein back, good extended trot, nice transition to passage, nice piaffe in good rhythm and nice sit with good transitions, good extended walk, super collected walk, good transition to passage, bit tense final passage, error transition to canter, bit unbalanced zig-zig, good 1 times, good pirouettes, good transition to trot at M, nice diagonal, very nice final centerline.

UVM udtagelse. Her var Jacob jo i 2017 repræsenteret i Ermelo med Ellegaardens San Droneur.

Auction focus - Van Olst Sales - KING KONG

22KingKong-Galopfoto-Web-Van-Olst-Sales-414x276.jpg

When you´ve been following the international top sport, this boy just bring the genes and qualities himself for the big sport. Both Zhidane and Taikoen has proved themselves under Anne van Olst at the international stage.

King Kong’s talent is undoubted. He was born for the big arena. King Kong has very good action and build. He was born with everything you could ever want in a horse. Despite his size he is very sharp. He is the ideal horse for someone seeking an absolute star for the more difficult work. This Glamourdale-son has Sigonda, by Negro, as dam. As well as being King Kong’s mother she is also that of the international Grand Prix dressage horse Zhidane, by Don Ruto, who is being competed by Anne van Olst in the international Grand Prix. Taikoen, by Negro, who she also rides, comes from this bloodline as well and he too has proved himself at the very highest level.
