FEI Dressage Nations Cup™: Sweden takes command in Compiègne
Heading into the final day of competition at the FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ in Compiègne (FRA), it was apparent it would take a monumental shift in momentum for Sweden to relinquish its grasp on the lead.
Still, the dominance with which the squad of Juliette Ramel (Buriel K.H.), Antonia Ramel (Curiosity) and Patrik Kittel (Touchdown), led by Chef d'Equipe Bo Jena, executed victory was eye-opening. When Kittel and Touchdown received an 82.025 percent score for their Freestyle, it left Sweden's final margin of victory at 32 points. Spain (48 points) finished second, with Belgium (51 points) third.
The win marked the third for Sweden at Compiègne in the last five years, having also triumphed in 2018 and 2021.
"We were a bit ahead of the others this time, and I'm very happy about that. They are doing so well in the ring and also in their training, and it looks very promising for the future."
Chef d'Equipe Bo Jena (SWE)
Each point was equal to an athlete's placing, with lower numbers reflecting top performances. All athletes competed in Saturday's Grand Prix before splitting across Sunday's Grand Prix Special and Grand Prix Freestyle tests, with the three best results tallied. No Swedish rider received a point tally in double digits, with all three making the podium in at least one test. After recording just 10 points from the Grand Prix, Sweden was even more dominant on Sunday, adding just six points to their score. While Kittel was the highest placing Nations Cup rider in the Grand Prix Freestyle, Juliet Ramel finished second in the Special (75.277%), with Antonia Ramel just behind her in third (72.043%).
"The horses have done very fault-free tests, and if there have been small faults, we have still be able to pick it up with high points," Kittel said. "I think that's what I'm most happy with. The thing is, the horses have all just been there for us through the entire weekend."
Sweden put forth a squad of veteran riders—each an Olympic veteran—but the horses brought forward were mixed in experience. Touchdown had only performed two previous Freestyle tests at the CDI5* level and had never before contested a CDIO event. Curiosity, formerly trained in jumping, is also new to the level, having represented Sweden in one previous Nations Cup event at Aachen (GER).
"He's been with me for a long time," Antonia said. "He was in the beginning a jumping horse, which he did until he was six. I've educated him on my own, and I've had him now for seven years."
With three appearances in the Olympic Games and a bronze medal from the European Championships, Buriel K.H. stood tall as the equine veteran of the group. The gelding performed with remarkable consistency, recording just 3 points in the Grand Prix (75.391%) and two points in the Grand Prix Special.
"He's an amazing character. He always has my back," Juliette said. "I've had him since he was 7; now he's 16. So we've had a long partnership."
Sweden's win put them atop the standings for the 2022 FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ season with 15 points. Spain sits second with 13 points, two ahead of Belgium (11 points). The FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ returns 23-26 June in Rotterdam (BEL).
"It means a lot [to start the season strongly]. It's always good to have a victory in a five-star Nations Cup to start with, and then we can go on with the rest," Bena said. "And we have been lucky and also good, I would say, [in previous years], because we have won in Compiègne before. We like it very much here."
VIDEOS - Fry was flying into today´s CDIO5* Grand Prix victory at Compiegne together with Glamourdale
Fry is on fire
Another event where British Charlotte Fry shows her horses in absolute top form.
Recently Charlotte had some problems with her long time partner Dark Legend, where he got really scared by a camera during her test, and he actually still showed some tensions at the last competition. Here at Compiegne he is fully back on track with her and placed 3rd in the Grand Prix with 73,543% and 4th in the Grand Prix Special with 74,383%.
End of March Fry made international debut with 9 year old KWPN stallion Inclusive by Everdale / Uptown, and Fry manage the give the talented stallion confidence and super experience during their performances. Compiegne is just their 3rd international event and were placed 5th in the CDI3* Grand Prix with 70,5% and 3rd in todays Grand Prix freestyle with 78,600%.
Today Lottie and 11 year old KWPN stallion Glamourdale by Lord Leatherdale / Negro took the CDIO5* individual Grand Prix victory with impressive 79,435%, almost 2,5% in front of Isabell Werth with DSP Quantas.
They showed a lovely powerful test and still without tensions, with an obedient and 100% attentive Glamourdale. Watching their performance your never in doubt about their partnership, and how the big black stallion just wants to performe each exercise as told from his rider. We´ve previous seen an even more powerful test, but as they looked today they just showed so much individual medal potential for the up-coming World Championships.
A single but very expensive technical error by the second pirouette where it look as if Charlotte wants him a tiny bit to much back for the pirouette and loosing the balance. What a pity and about 2% lost at the scoreboard.
Tomorrow Sunday they have start time at 11.50 in the CDIO5 Grand Prix Special.

Dansker i Aachen
Claus Hansen stopper i Dansk Varmblods avlsledelse

VIDEO - CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle victory to Danish Lone Bang Larsen with Thranegaardens Rostov
Light and easy
Danish Lone Bang and her 12 year old mare Thranegaardens Rostov by Blue Hors Romanov / Diamond show a very nice Grand Prix freestyle today. (Not their best score but from the side line their best test).
Very harmonious and balanced overall picture. No technical issues and very good go and flow for the entire test. One of the highlights was the light and easy contact with a nice closed mouth all the time. It is a pleasure to watch this kind of self carriage under the riders aides all the way.
Very nice choice of music with high degree of difficulty, and where the music is fitted into each exercise. A well deserved victory today in front of Andreas Helgstrand with 8 year old Queenparks Wendy by Sezuan / Blue Hors Soprano. Lots of qualities but still some unbalanced moments for today´s test and where you of course still can see that Wendy is missing some strength.

VIDEO - Jovian, Zippo M.I. and Heiline´s Zackton in top of today´s CDI3 Grand Prix Special in Aalborg
Jovian & Andreas Helgstrand - WOW Grand Prix Special debut 77,915%. Trot steps into super halt, power expressive balanced diagonal, huge crossing up hill half pass left, good into passage, explosive out into extended trot, back up into regular big passage, huge crossing half pass right, one step after the other, uphill balanced, good walk tour, early start for piaffe bit forward, good transitions, active 2nd piaffe better at the place with nice angle, bit big into canter from passage, bit tense hind for canter half passes, nice 2 times, bit swinging 1 times, good extended canter, well balanced 1st pirouette, good bit swinging 1 times, good 2nd pirouette, power long side extended trot, super final centerline.
It is just awesome how this only 8 year old stallion is able both to float and collect with such qualities. Andreas just kicked off a very exciting new chapter less than 3 month before World Championships in Herning.
Zippo M.I. / Daniel Bachmann Andersen - Well balanced expressive trot and passage tours, nice well balanced left, tiny lost of balance into right half pass, good walk tour, good 1st piaffe lacking bit more balance, well managed 2nd piaffe, good transitions, tense transition to canter, good balance for half passes, good 2 times, good straight 1 times, good extended canter, bit big 1st pirouette, good 1 times, 2nd missing bit more centering, good extension long side, good final centerline, good halt. 72,000% - super international debut!
Daniel just produced another international Grand Prix horse, and with Zippo he shows how to develop from event to event. This is just the beginning.
Heiline´s Zackton / Carina Cassøe Krüth. Smooth trot tour with nice transitions, passage and good extensions, good walk tour, forward 1st piaffe, better at the place 2nd piaffe, good transitions, nice into canter, good zigzag, final change for 2 times with parallel, error end of 1 times, good extended canter, huge sit for both pirouettes, good 1 times, good into trot, good extension, nice final centerline, with super halt. 70,234%
Solid work and today with a clearly more motivated and body wise relaxed Zackton.
VIDEOS - Jovian and Andreas Helgstrand entered the international Grand Prix scene today with impressive 77,130%
Aalborg Dressage Event started today with three international CDI3 classes: Prix St. Georg, U25 Grand Prix and Grand Prix.
The weather was not much spring like, as it was very windy with some smaller showers during the day, and for some of the horses it made quite a difference coming from the indoor warm-up arena going out into the stormy weather.
For the small tour Nanna Merrald and Blue Hors Znickers showed a super balanced test without any major issues, only a small unbalance into the 2nd canter half pass. Severo Jurado Lopez and the beautiful Fresco were placed 2nd with a strong trot tour, but some difficulties for the series. Placed 3rd was Michael Søgaard with his big boy Jukebox showing a well managed test without any technical issues. Last placed in Prix St. Georg was Danish Anne Marie Hosbond with Scarlett, recently also placed international at Kronenberg, NED.
The field for U25 unfortunately was missing more quality
Only high overall qualities for the future was showed by international U25 debut combination Danish Aagaardens Lianne and Karoline Rohmann. Even though it was equal scores with Blue Hors Veneziano the qualities seen from the side line was obvious with a clear surplus for Karoline and Lianne.
Jovian with 77% international debut
Recently Andreas showed 8 year old Jovian at national Grand Prix level with impressive 83% and of course everyones eye where on Jovian and Andreas today. Were they able to show and score at that level with an international judging panel? YES they were able to impress the entire judging panel today, as they all agreed on 77%. Just 3 x 10 for extended trot today, and no 10´s for half passes yet. Let´s see for tomorrow´s Grand Prix Special.
Helgstrand also made his international GP debut today with Queenparks Wendy with a strong performance.
Lone Bang Larsen and Thranegaardens Rostov were placed 3rd with Personal Best score 72,326%. Technical strong performance with only an unbalanced transition to canter from passage.
Daniel Bachmann Andersen does really improve his performances with Zippo M.I. everytime we see them in the arena. Today more relaxation, much better paiffe tours and really nice series, unfortunately an expensive lost of balance in the first pirouette.
Here you find all results from the event.
