FEI PRESS RELEASE - Dutch and Danish stallions steal the show
Stallions from the KWPN studbook claimed both the 6 and 7-Year-Old titles while a Danish Warmblood was crowned 5-Year-Old champion at the FEI WBFSH Dressage World Breeding Championship for Young Horses which returned to Verden in Germany for the 2021 edition from 24 to 29 August.
6-Year-Olds
Tokyo 2020 Olympic team bronze medallist, Great Britain’s Charlotte Fry, posted 94.000% in Wednesday’s 6-Year-Old qualifier with the KWPN stallion Kjento (Negro x Jazz), earning 10s for both trot and canter, and the pair never looked back. In Saturday’s Final they shone even brighter, with judges Peter Storr (GBR), Adriaan F. Hamoen (NED), Maria Colliander (FIN) and Jean-Michel Roudier (FRA) awarding them gold with a score of 96.000. Kjento earned 10s for trot, canter, submission and perspective.
Silver went to the Rheinlander stallion Escamillo (Escolar x Rohdiamant) ridden by Spain’s Manuel Dominguez Bernal who posted 93.4%, while the Hannoverian gelding For Magic Equesta (For Romance OLD x Jungle Prince) scored 86.4 for bronze with Poland’s Beata Stremler in the saddle.
Fry is no stranger to success in these Championships, taking the 7-Year-Old title with Glamourdale in Ermelo (NED) in 2018, and in Gert-Jan Van Olst’s Kjento she has found another exceptional ride. “When I got all those 10s I got very emotional, and it is thrilling to see that everyone sees the same quality as we do. He felt his best ever, and I don’t know how to describe this horse - if you look up the word power, he is it!”, she said.
Judge Jean-Michel Roudier praised the quality of both the horses and horsemanship he witnessed.
"The improvement in breeding and riding is incredible over the last years. The winner Kjento was a happy horse like all the three medallists - a happy horse means wonderful training and it gives a wonderful willingness in the horse."
Jean-Michel Roudier
5-Year-Olds
Germany’s Eva Moller had a sensational day in the 5-Year-Old Qualifier on Thursday when steering the Hannoverian stallion, Danciero 7 (Dancier x Fuechtels Floriscount), into pole position and the Oldenburg stallion Global Player OLD (Grand Galaxy Win T x Blue Hors Don Schufro) into third. Sandwiched in between these two was the KWPN mare Lightning Star (Ferguson x De Niro) ridden by The Netherlands Kristen Brouwer.
Danciero 7, owned by Helgestrand/Schockemohle, scored 96.600, Lightning Star posted 95.200% and Global Player OLD was awarded 95.000%.
But in Sunday’s medal decider it was the Danish Warmblood stallion Hesselhoej Down Town (Hesselhoej Donkey Boy x Blue Hors Zack), ridden by Sweden’s Jeanna Hogberg, who grabbed the gold with an amazing score of 97.000%. The pair had finished fourth in the opening competition three days earlier, but with 10s for trot and perspective, and 9.5s for walk, canter and submission, this time they left the rest in their wake. Danciero 7 had to settle for silver with 96.600% while Lightning Star took the bronze with 92.8%. Moller’s second ride, Global Player OLD, just missed out on the podium when earning a mark of 92.600%.
Hesselhoej Down Town was real crowd pleaser. “When I got him everyone said he’s so cute and he really is, but he’s also a really fantastic horse!”, Hogberg said. “I have a great team behind me and I have a lot of support from Andreas (Helgstrand), and I think today it was a matter of riding a really solid test without faults and at the same time showing the best of the horse, and he really stayed with me”, she explained.
Thursday’s test had been a bit disappointing, but yesterday’s performance was in a different league. “He was a bit surprised by the environment on the first day, but today he was much more relaxed”, Hogberg said. However she pointed out that the young stallion is no pushover. “He’s also the only horse at Helgstrand that I have fallen off!”, she added with a laugh.
Brouwer was delighted with bronze for the mare Lightning Star. “I’ve been riding Lily a long time and know her well but of course with Corona I didn’t get the chance to show her a lot. But she makes me every day happy, also here, she’s always fresh and willing to work. Today maybe there was a bit more tension because there was a lot of applause when you were warming up. But she’s only five and has a great future, I hope I can ride her a lot longer”, the Dutch athlete said.
7-Year-Olds
The last Championship to be decided was the 7-Year-Olds, and Danish riders completely dominated the podium but it was the KWPN stallion Jovian (Apache x Tango) who claimed the title with Andreas Helgstrand on board.
The Helgstrand name was all over these Championships as owners, sponsors, riders and producers of top-class Dressage horses, and in Friday’s qualifier Andreas steered Jovian to victory ahead of the Danish Warmblood stallion Elverhøjs Raccolto (Sezuan 2 x Sandro Hit) ridden by his wife Marianne Yde Helgstrand.
The Hannoverian stallion Quando Unico (Quantensprung 3 x Fidertanz 2), partnered by Australia’s Simone Pearce, lined up in third while Andreas Helgstrand also finished fourth with the Danish Warmblood mare Queenpark Wendy (Sezuan 2 x Blue Hors Soprano). But in Sunday’s final only Jovian stood his ground.
A mark of 89.136 from judges Sharon Rhode (RSA), Ulrike Nivelle (GER), Maria Colliander (FIN), Mariette Sanders van Gansewinkel (NED) and Kurt Christensen (DEN) gave Jovian the title, while silver went to the Danish Warmblood gelding Blue Hors Touch of Olympic L (Don Olymbrio x Fidermark) who posted 83.965 with Denmark’s Nanna Skodberg Merrald on board. And the third Dane on the podium was Anne-Mette Strandby Hansen who steered the Westphalian gelding Eternity 75 (Escolar x Sir Donnerhal) to a score of 83.75% to pin Pearce and Quando Unico back into fourth place.
“To win with Jovian is special, he is my favourite horse. He is a PR machine for us and he will have a lot of very nice foals coming up”, said Helgstrand.
Nanna Skodborg Merrald was very pleased to take silver for the Danish Warmblood studbook. “We have had so many good horses for DWB and it is good to give back”, she said. She’s been riding Blue Hors Touch of Olympic L since he was a four-year-old and is looking forward to watching him develop. “I will go into small tour shows with him now, I think he is a future Grand Prix horse”, she added.
And Anne-Mette Skodborg Hansen had every reason to be pleased with Eternity 75 because she’s only been riding him for two months. “Cathrine Dufour trained him and this is my first competition with him!”, she said after collecting 7-Year-Old bronze.
Reflecting on another great FEI WBFSH Dressage World Breeding Championship for Young Horses, German judge Ulrike Nivelle commented that this year “we saw huge quality and the level is much better than before, both in breeding and riding. We saw more harmony and softer riding”, she concluded.

NRW PRESS RELEASE
1st Westphalian Online Auction Special with great succes
Münster: The 1st Westphalian Online Auction Special ended this evening with a fantastic result. The auction was dedicated solely to the Bundeschampionesse Feine Bella NRW. For a price of 305,000 euros, the mare changed hands to Helgstrand Dressage.
Two weeks ago, Feine Bella NRW won the Bundeschampionat for four-year-old riding horses. Now the Fürstenball/Bordeaux daughter (breeder: ZG Artmeier, Becker, Delling, Wibbecke) was up for sale at the 1st Westphalian Online Auction Special. The bidding duel for the mare started on Tuesday with an opening bid of 150,000 euros. The highly anticipated BidUp started this evening at 7.30 pm. By then, the highest bid had climbed to 300,000 euros. Eleven parties fought for the bid for the talented dark bay mare. In the end she was sold to Helgstrand Dressage for 305,000 euros.
Feine Bella NRW is not only the current Bundeschampionesse of four-year-old riding horses. Shortly before the Bundeschampionat, she became the celebrated Westphalia Champion in Münster-Handorf. Last year she was the champion mare of the Westphalian Elite Show. An exceptional horse with a great future ahead of her. The predisposition for this was already laid in her cradle. She descents from the same dam line as Isabell Werth's successful horse Bella Rose. The granddam of the Tokyo gold medal winner is also the fourth dam of Feine Bella NRW. "I am very happy that we got the opportunity from the breeders to auction Feine Bella in Westphalia. The 1st Westphalian Online Auction Special was very well received by the customers. Feine Bella NRW is a very special horse. Holding a separate auction for the mare was exactly the right decision. We hope to hear a lot more about her in the future and wish the new owners only the best!", said Auction and Marketing Manager Thomas Münch.
Jovian and Helgstrand - the perfect match
Jovian and Andreas Helgstrand - photo credit: Timo Martis
It can rain, snow or whatever weather - Jovian and Andreas just doing their thing together
Pressure or not they just performed for their gold medal today. The perfect match because Andreas Helgstrand is able to show the big stallion in a powerful and easy way without any need of extra push or pull. The scores speaks for itself - no comments and well deserved World Champion.
From the preliminary test Mrs Helgstrand was obvious for the silver, but today she unfortunately did not shine in the same way with the super nice Sezuan son Elverhøjs Raccolto. Whether it was nerves or a bit to much pressure on the talented Raccolto it just didn’t look the same easy and effortless way as day 1, so suddenly the silver position was open.
Bronze position from the first round Quando Unico with Simone Pearce start their test today with a lot of quality and lovely balance, but at the end of the canter tour they just lost the rhythm and flow and also their chance for the medal.
On the other hand Anne-Mette Strandby Hansen with Eternity just rode their chance and succeeded today. Lots of elasticity, quality and expression for the trot, strong canter tour and a bit limited walk tour but enough to step up on the podium.
But where did Blue Hors Touch of Olympic L and Nanna Merrald come from?
Actually they came from 6th place in the preliminary test going surprisingly directly into silver position. Super solid performance today without any technical issues, superb walk tour and well moving in both trot and canter. Over all a very harmonious quality combination but unfortunately lacking clearly more expression and power for the silver position from H2R point of view.
Hesselhøj Down Town was shining like the star he is today
Hesselhøj Down Town with Jeanna Högberg - photo credit: Timo Martis
5 year old final with Danish Warmblood in top
Hesselhøj Down Town by Hesselhøj Donkey Boy (former bronze medalist) / Blue Hors Zack superb presented by Swedish Jeanna Högberg. For the preliminary test they showed a strong performance but were not shining in the way they did today.
Down Town was entering the arena shining and after the final halt he was definitely the winner together with Jeanna Högberg today. From very young riding horse this stallion show his abilities and willingness to perform and now as a 5 year old World Champion he has really kicked off his career. He is not the obvious first choice of a breeding stallion but for sure a high quality sport horse for the future.
From following Down Town and lately at the Danish Warmblood selection it was obvious that he really got the gold medal qualities and today he just proved it together with Jeanna.
Eva Möller just makes her own history producing one young horse after the other. Today’s silver horse Danciero is not a flashing stallion, but three correct paces and an outstanding basic training from Frau Möller making him able to show his fully potential. Exactly same fine education from Eva for former Olderburger Champion stallion Global Player.
Bronze medalist Lightning Star with Kirsten Brouwer was for sure at “lightning star” for the trot tour today, good walk tour but unfortunately bit of tension for the canter at not quite same qualities as for the first day.
Las Vegas by Ferdeaux / Wynton with Franke Loos does show a lot of natural balance, obedience and quality. The big stallion could have been presented with a bit more power but for sure a horse for the podium qualities but today the walk mark was a bit harsh from H2R point of view.
Danish finalists
Big achievement for both Dennis Kjær with Polka Fascination M by Fürstenball / Sandro Hit and Tophøj´s Diadora with Eric Guardia Martinez. Both showed their horses in super form, well prepared and motivated for the job, unfortunately with a few hiccups today for both quality horses.
VIDEOS - Expression, tact, balance and power off the ground = World Champion 2021 for 6 year old horses Kjento
World Champion 2021 Kjento with Charlotte Fry - photo credit: Timo Martis
Convincing victory in the 6 year old final today
With two strong stallions in top of the field from the preliminary round the gold and silver were quite obvious before the final.
From today’s judges the charming and well presented Suarez by Sezuan / Desperados with Mette Sejbjerg Jensen stepped down the podium (3rd in the preliminary test) and finished as no 9. (From H2R very harsh judging). Well deserved winner of the small final Fürst Kennedy by Fürsten-Look / Don Kennedy moves up to 11 position in the final.
Both breeding stallions Kjento by Negro / Jazz with Charlotte Fry and Escamillo by Escolar / Rohdiamant with Manuel Dominguez Bernal did their job with full concentration and power both days.
Escamillo: Nice halt, good diagonal, nice balance uphill shoulder in, good volte, supple half pass left, better diagonal with better swing, nice shoulder in, volte and well balanced half pass, good into walk, lack bit more clear contact to the bit for extended walk, lacking bit more collection for collected walk, good walk pirouettes, lovely forward flow for canter, super 1st flying change, nice 2nd change, super uphill forward 3rd change, 4th change super uphill, lack bit more clear flow for transition to trot, good diagonal, nice halt.
Super good horse - super good riding from the judges.
Surprisingly but well deserved at bronze position for today’s final Polish Beata Stremler with her well educated and super balanced gelding For Magic Equesta by For Romance / A Jungle Prince. They came from at 5th place in the preliminary test.
For Magic Equesta: Nice halt, nice balanced diagonal, nice tact and rhythm for shoulder in, volte and half pass, expressive diagonal in super balance, good extended walk, good collected walk including good pirouettes, tiny tension for transition to canter, bit tense 1st change, 2nd change very nice, 3rd change ok, good 4th change, power diagonal, good halt.
“Leistungsbereitschaft”
When it comes to podium horses it is not just the performance and the qualities, but also if they are bodywise well developed and prepared, and do the horses look like they are doing the exercises with surplus, easyness and obedience. All three podium horses were showing great “Leistungsbereitschaft”.
Kjento really enjoy his time in the arena
Going into the arena where Charlotte making him confident doing a few rounds and when entering the centerline they are both fully focused on the job. Not a single step wrong, power and accuracy in the full package combined with expression, tact, balance and a special “Kjento power off the ground”. For his trot and canter work the way he is able to push himself of the ground is something very special where he is showing his strength in his entire body and within the same time to keep an outstanding outline all the time keeping a nice positioning of head and neck. The walk is clear and active and very useable for the future sport.

Outstanding wife and husband achievement in today's 7 year old qualifier
The Danish flag 🇩🇰was dominating the top of the scoreboard today
No one is in doubt about Helgstrand Dressage and their leading position when it comes to the best Young Horses in the world.
Today Andreas Helgstrand showed two former World Championship medal horses, Queenparks Wendy by Sezuan / Blue Hors Soprano (at start for Denmark) and Jovian by Apache / Tango (at start for The Netherlands).
Queenparks Wendy with a very good performance today, but not shining like when she was 5 year old. The trot look like a bit on the tempo active and for some moments she is loosing the clear forward flow and becomes a bit passage like in the front, she shows a good walk but for the collected part she needs to show more suppleness, good canter with a technical strong part but for the 9,5 the canter quality must be even more convincing especially for the pirouettes.
How would Jovian cope with the heavy rain?
You were not in doubt about Andreas as he does not enter the World Championships being disturbed by some heavy showers and likewise Jovian was power dancing through the rain. The way Andreas is keeping the big stallion in front of him in a beautiful frame with super contact without any hesitation or misunderstanding, and at the demanding 7 year old level just controlled powering from entering halt to finish halt.
It was a clear 12! for the trot, today a friendly 8,0 for the walk as from the sideline the extended walk was lacking more over track. 9.8 for the canter, yes for the extensions, but going into the pirouettes and the canter quality for the pirouettes were not for a nearly 10. No doubt this is a clear 10 perspective horse and they will be the one to beat in the final Sunday.
What a wife and husband achievement
Marianne Helgstrand show Elverhøj´s Raccolto by Sezuan / Sandro Hit (Dam Polka Hit Nexen former WCYH silver medalist). Raccolto is a dream horse to ride Marianne told, he is always eager to work and please his rider and you really got that feeling watching them together today.
Today’s undoubtedly best canter was worth a clear 10 non of the other horses managed that quality, no matter if it was collected, extended, for flying change or in the pirouettes - clear balance off the ground with top abilities. And for the Jameson RS2 fans yes he does show a 12 for the extensions but as soon as it says collection he is unfortunately not able to maintain the the clear canter beat like Raccolto.
Must have been a very special moment being at the price giving as 1st and 2nd and as husband and wife.
Further placed combinations
Australian Simone Pearce was the only (foreigner) in the top 6. She showed a top motivated Quando Unico without any quality and technical issues. They definitely will go for a medal. The canter today was closer to a 10 than the 9!
Anne-Mette Strandby Hansen with Eternity (at start for Germany) also showed a clear 10 for the trot tour and from H2R point of view also more likely placed in front of Queenparks Wendy today even though the walk is the pace keeping them off the podium.
Nanna Merrald and her Blue Hors Don Olymbrio son Blue Hors Touch of Olympic showed a very solid performance and the three good paces combined with a well prepared and supple test made it to the top of the field.

Eva Möller conquer the 5 year old qualifier today in Verden
Danish Warmblood stallion Hesselhøj Down Town and Jeanna Högberg - photo credit: EQWO.net
Eva Möller will be the one to beat in the final
The judges started the day with two very strong performances first from KWPN stallion Las Vegas with Franka Loos and then Global Player with Eva Möller, but said that the scoreboard seems to get a bit to hot from the morning.
Germany´s Eva Möller once again showed her horses in top form without putting a hoof wrong during their tests. Both tests well balanced in a nice tempo, super contact and frame. Eva will definitely be the one to beat in the final.
Like the 6 year old qualifier the top of the 5 year old qualifier was also dominated by breeding stallions, but said that the mare Lightning Star with Kirsten Brouwer just brings something extraordinary and from H2R point of view she really look like a World Champion.
Two Danish Warmblood horses directly qualified for the final
Both Hesselhøj Down Town and Tophøjs Diadora by Danish Warmblood Hesselhøj Donkey Boy shows three super gaits with huge ride ability and potential for the future and well deserved directly into the final.
Placed just outside top 12 today was Danish Warmblood mare Polka Fascination M with Dennis Kjær, and from their performance today they deserve a ticket for the final through tomorrow´s small final.

From watching the entire class today it definitely look like a World Champion combination.
