FEI PRESS RELEASE - Werth steps back into the Lyon limelight

Corrections in Bold Italic

For the fifth time in a row, German supremo Isabell Werth won the FEI Dressage World Cup™ 2021/2022 Western European League qualifier in Lyon, France tonight. And she did it with the 16-year-old mare Weihegold OLD with whom she claimed the last three series titles.

Twelfth to go in an exciting 15-strong field filled with many rising stars, the pair earned a score of 84.910 and that couldn’t be beaten. But Denmark’s Nanna Skodborg Merrald and Atterupgaards Orthilia came close when putting a personal-best 83.695 on the board for a test that oozed consistency and class.

This 16-year-old mare, formerly competed by Danish compatriot Agnete Kirk Thinggaard and before that by Great Britain’s Fiona Bigwood and before that again by Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour at Young Rider level, just keeps on giving and, in the hands of this talented 28-year-old Dane continues to thrive in the ring.

New series

Dufour, who has risen to the very top of the game and who won the first leg of the new series last weekend with her 18-year-old super-hero Atterupgaards Cassidy, competed the nine-year-old gelding Vamos Amigos this time around. And the young horse showed remarkable maturity in a test that included lovely passage/piaffe work to take the lead with 81.135 when the action resumed after the halfway break.

That proved good enough for fourth place at the end of the day, behind Werth at the head of affairs, Nanna Skodborg Merrald in second and Germany’s Frederic Wandres who slotted into third when last to go with Duke of Britain FRH.

Wandres has been enjoying a good year, collecting the maximum 20 points for a win at the Central European League leg in Samorin (SVK) in August which, when added to those collected at the first two legs on the Western European circuit, leaves him heading the league table going into the next qualifier in Madrid, Spain in a months’ time.

Currently Dufour lies second on the leaderboard ahead of The Netherlands’ Thamar Zweistra in third and Nanna Skodborg Merrald in fourth place. But there’s a long and winding road leading to the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final in Leipzig, Germany next April to which the top nine finishers on the Western European leaderboard will be invited.

Defending

Werth earned no points for her win today, as defending champion she is automatically qualified for the Final with a horse of her choice which must have competed in the Freestyle to Music in at least two qualifiers. But it looks like Weihegold won’t be the one fighting that fight in 2022.

The athlete who has collected a mountain of medals during her spectacular career said this evening that she was “super happy” with her horse but “not super happy with my own management! I made a mistake and she was then not as good as she can be!” Her self-criticism is one of the characteristics that has kept her at the very top of the game for so many years, always wanting to do better.

Outlining her plans for the coming months she said she would take Weihegold to the Top Ten dressage final in Stockholm, Sweden in November, and then to Frankfurt in December

"“for what will be her last show, because that’s where it all started!”

Isabell Werth (GER)

It was with Weihegold that her back-to-back run of victories at the Lyon qualifier began in 2016. Riding Emilio she won again in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and today Weihegold showed she can still do all the fancy footwork. The mare’s staggering record includes the FEI Dressage World Cup™ titles in 2017, 2018 and 2019 along with team gold and individual silver at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and five European gold medals.

Delighted

Meanwhile Nanna Skodborg Merrald was delighted to find herself in runner-up spot today. “I really like the pressure and it’s great to ride in front of an audience again after nearly two years without shows and the public”, said the 28-year-old who, partnering Blue Hors Zack, was a member of the fourth-placed Danish team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this summer.

Winner Werth agreed with that. “The atmosphere here was great, it felt like we are nearly getting back to normal life, so well done to the Organising Committee for what they have done!”, she said.

And Show Director Sylvie Robert was very happy this evening. “We really suffered with no event for nearly two years, so it is a great achievement to be back and to have the crowd with us again this year!”, she said.

Nanna/Orhilia or Werth/Weihegold victory yesterday?

You can actually make some comparisons for the two mares Atterupgaards Orthlilia and Weihegold OLD as both mares are not big really movers but with high lights for the piaffe and passage tours.

When it comes to the details yesterday’s elasticity and regularity of the passage tours were clearly with surplus for Orthilia, also the extensions were in another league for Orthilia, piaffe tours with super sit and obedience and clock work transitions. Even though non of the mares has a strong walk the regularity and balance for Orthilia is obvious while Weihegold is struggling to keep the clear rhythm especially for the collected walk (camera angle from behind) shows that it is not a clear four beat walk.

Harmony and expression is in a league of it own for Atterupgaards Orthilia and Nanna Merrald and winners as also judges at E Francis Verbeek van Rooij (NED) saw the Danish combination yesterday. Judge at C Isabelle Judet (FRA) saw Werth and Merrald equal for the victory.

Issues

Nanna and Orthilia showed a minor error for two times with one change with parallel hind legs, while Isabell and Weihegold showed a weak collected walk tour, change issue at end of canter half passes and error for the one times.

Duke of Britain with Frederic Wandres clearly took advantage from countryman judge at B - Katrina Wüst and also judge at H - Dr. Jean-Michel Roudier (FRA) saw them ahead for Dufour. Might be a good idea to re-view the tests as it was obvious that Dufour was 3rd best in yesterday’s freestyle.

Judge for yourself here below where you can watch both Werth and Merrald tests.

Atterupgaards Orthilia and Danish Nanna Merrald in top of today's World Cup Grand Prix at Lyon

World Cup short Grand Prix

Lyon is the 2nd leg of this World Cup season and the short Grand Prix test look like a very good choice and suits the World Cup series. It shows the importance of not doing any mistakes as there is no room for catching up later. Even though Werth and Weihegold showed a minor issue for the 2 two times, Werth just manage to “recover” and bring home another victory today.

Frederic Wandres and Duke of Britain showed another very consistent test without any technical issues.

“Podium” for Danish Nanna Merrald and Atterupgaards Orthilia

Blue Hors rider Nanna Merrald and 16 year old Atterupgaard Orthilia showed a really nice test without any technical issues. The overall picture is very harmonious, well balanced and expressive. Since the Europeans the contact has improved a lot and Nanna and Tille has now become a very solid Danish top combination.

Their performance was of course also congratulated by their fans on Facebook, where former owner and Olympic rider Fiona Bigwood wrote “AMAZING!!! well done!!!”

Lyon was the first very big show for 9 year old Vamos Amigos and he looked very comfortable and relaxed entering the big scene. Unfortunately and error for the zigzag today kept them out of the very top of the field.

Super halt, expressive super balanced diagonal, bit big eye short side, supple half pass left, good transition right superb, bit tense rein back, super passage of the ground, WOW piaffe at the spot active of the ground not tense, superb transitions, super into walk, super relaxed extended walk, super collected walk, nice transition to canter, bit low in the contact and error zigzag, nice 2 times, well balanced 1st pirouettte, super 1 times, nice 2nd pirouette well balanced, good diagonal superb change, nice into trot, superb final centerline, super halt. 73,895%

Van Olst Sales ridden horses with quality and potential

Focus horses

This time Van Olst Sales presents a collection of young horses ready for their new rider. All horses are ridden and shows qualities and potential for the sport.

No 1 - Jack

Jack is a 7 year old gelding presented by Charlotte Fry. He shows great ride ability, good qualities and not least potential for the highest level. He will in a short time be ready for competition with his next rider at Prix St. Georg level.

The oldest horse in this auction is Negro's son Jack. As with many descendants of Negro, the real talents emerge during the collected work. This 7 year old gelding has no problem with the highest form of collection. The passage is like a clock and the piaffe is also present in good quality.

Jack's dam herself competed at Z1 level and she is also the dam of Jack's full brother, Esplendido AZ, who competes at Small Tour level.

No 11 - Pinot Noir - approved stallion

Super well balanced just 3 year old stallion showing lots of natural power, suppleness and expression.

Painted Black was himself at stud at Van Olst Horses and this Pinot Noir also comes from this successful period. FEI PRESS RELEASE - Cathrine and Cassidy are the show-stealers at Herning

They were billed as the superstars that everyone wanted to see, and tonight the brilliant Danish partnership of Cathrine Dufour and Atterupgaards Cassidy didn’t disappoint. In a field sprinkled with both blossoming and established talent they reigned supreme to win the exciting first leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ 2021/2022 Western European League on home ground at Herning.

They had to work hard however, because compatriots Carina Cassøe Krüth and Heiline’s Danciera put on a spectacular performance to finish second, while the Dutch duo of Dinja van Liere and Hermes were sensational when slotting into third.

Young horses were really impressive tonight, showing so much promise for things to come. But the crowd went wild when the old boy of the pack, the 18-year-old Cassidy, showed that he still has all the moves when stealing the limelight.

Opened

The action opened with Jennie Larson and Zircoon Spring Flower, the sole Swedish representatives when Patrik Kittel was withdrawn as his ride, Fiontini, was sold.

It was German Eventing idol, Ingrid Klimke, who led the way at the halfway stage however when posting 78.750 with Franziskus 15. And when the action resumed after the break, Denmark’s Lone Bang Larsen went out in front with a lovely test from the 11-year-old mare Thranegaardens Rostov that earned 79.525. But then Van Liere and her fabulous nine-year-old stallion Hermes, who took the sport by storm when winning the Grand Prix in Aachen (GER) last month, forged a massive lead when putting 84.360 on the board.

With three left to go then Cassøe Krüth bettered that with a beautiful Freestyle from her 10-year-old mare that, despite a mistake in the one-tempi changes, earned a massive 86.395. So, second-last to go, Dufour and Cassidy had to do something special. But they’ve done it many times during their many years together and tonight was no exception. Posting 87.115 they bagged victory and brought the Danish crowd to their feet.

Crying

“I was crying my heart out, it was really fantastic!”, said Dufour afterwards. With her younger horse, the 11-year-old Bohemian, she earned silver and bronze at the FEI Dressage European Championships last month, not long after returning from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. But achieving what she did tonight with Atterupgaards Cassidy who carried her to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and who has collected 12 European Championship medals, including Young Rider gold and double-bronze at Senior level, during their hugely successful career together was just so very special. It’s about 18 months since he last appeared at an international event, but tonight he showed he still loves every moment of it.

“I mean he is turning 19 in one month and he’s just one of a kind. He’s been with me for 11 years and I have really had enough, but he hasn’t yet! I brought him here so that he could feel important again and he could show the crowd that he still wants to do it, so I’m over the moon!”, Dufour said.

Yesterday he already made it clear he’s still very much in the game when winning the Grand Prix. And tonight he posted his Freestyle victory with apparently effortless ease.

Fit

Dufour says the horse she calls “Cassie”, keeps himself fit. “You don’t have to do too much at home. I ride him once, maybe twice a week in dressage and the other days he’s just stretching and jogging or doing pole-work or hacking, so I think that’s why he’s so super healthy.

"He’s just clever, he’s never using himself too much, he gives that much extra in the competitions but back home I never ask for that. I just keep my fingers crossed when I bring him out and hope that he will do it, and he shows me again and again that he will!"

Cathrine Dufour (DEN)

And she insisted that she came out tonight with no huge expectations. “I said at the beginning of this competition that there was no pressure, I wasn’t going to ride to win. I didn’t want to push Cassie to win, everything he offered me I took, but I wouldn’t have pushed him to do any more than he wanted”, she said. And will this be his last public appearance before going into well-earned retirement? Possibly not, it seems.

“We’ll see what this season brings and I might do one more show with him, but he will be the one who decides, not me!”, said the 29-year-old Dane who will take another horse, Vamos Amigos, to the second leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Western European League at Lyon, France next week.

Cheer

The Danish crowd had plenty to cheer about tonight, and for runner-up Cassøe Krüth it was an extra test for her 10-year-old mare when they clapped loudly as the pair progressed up the final centreline. But Danciera seemed to enjoy it “and she has never felt so good!”, said the 37-year-old Dane tonight.

“When they started clapping I thought Ohh, we still have a long way to go! But she stayed focused and it was ok and actually I think she liked it, so now they can do it any time!”, she added.

Dutch 31-year-old Van Liere was delighted with her result with Hermes. “Yesterday we had a couple of mistakes but it was our first Short Grand Prix and of course he still lacks experience. I’m riding him since he was three years old and I hope I will be able to ride him for many more years. I plan to do more World Cups but I don’t want to put too much pressure on him because he is still young”, said the athlete who hopes to bring him to the qualifiers on her home turf in Amsterdam in January and ’s-Hertogenbosch next March.

Show Director at Herning, Jens Trabjerg, was also very pleased tonight. “It’s always nice as an organiser to have such fantastic sport as we had today. We have tried for the past five years to get the audience to stay for the prize-giving and I have to say we have been quite successful”, he pointed out. Not too surprising perhaps when the home-side contenders steal all the glory in front of their home crowd.

It’s a short countdown to the next leg of the series in Lyon where the Grand Prix will take place on Thursday 28 and the Freestyle will kick off at 16.00 local time on Friday 29 October.

Don’t miss a hoofbeat….

Cathrine Dufour in a spectacular win in Herning at the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Western European League

Cathrine Dufour (DEN) entered her 18-year-old gelding Atterupgaards Cassidy as her partner in the opening leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ in Herning (DEN) - and won!

013E9455-393A-4E4B-A661-174D49E43320.jpeg

In 2017 the Cathrine Dufour and Atterupfaards Cassidy won the FEI Dressage World Cup™ at the same venue and tonight in front of an enthusiastic home crowd they showed a foot perfect freestyle owning them 87,115% from the five judges. The home crowd rose to their feet – cheering her and Cassidy on.

Cathrine Dufour: ”With Carina’s score, there was quite big pressure on us when we entered the ring. But we had some extra few seconds before the start, so when I picked up canter, he felt really sharp. And then the Danish crowd is fantastic. It is just breath-taking. Since this is one of Cassidy’s last shows, it was special to go in there and show that he is still sharp. I know that he is in really good shape, and he can do it – and he really proved that today. I am super proud of him”.

Carina Cassøe Krüth and her 10-year-old mare Heiline’s Danciera by Fürstenball danced together in their difficult freestyle, making everything seem easy and smooth. With a score of 86,395% her personal best, she ended second after her teammate from the Olympics in Tokyo, Cathrine Dufour.

Carina Cassøe Krüth: “She is just a super good friend in there. She is so honest, and she does everything I want from her, and even more. – She is just amazing. When the audience started clapping it was quite early, so I though ‘well you are going to do that for a while’, but it was very cool, and I think the Danish audience knows by now that they can applause as she likes it”.

The Dutch rider Dinja van Liere and her only 9-year-old stallion Hermes by Easy Game did their first indoor show in Herning, and she was very pleased with her ride in the freestyle earning her a third place with a score of 84,360%.

Dinja van Liere: “I was very pleased with him, and he did a very good job. Yesterday we had a couple of mistakes, but it was the first time we did the short Grand Prix. He doesn’t have that much experience, so I was very happy today and he did a really good freestyle test.

He was a bit impressed by the audience, but he was very cool in there. He is very handsome, and he knows it. I am just very proud of him”.

Cathrine Dufour burst into tears after her ride, it was an amasing and special feeling for her. Since she was a junior-rider Atterupgaards Cassidy by Caprimond has been her partner, and emotions ran high when she entered the arena for the prize giving ceremony.

The FEI Dressage World Cup™ in Herning was also the debut of the new version of the short Grand Prix – this short Grand Prix will be used throughout the World Cup season. Cathrine Dufour states: “I am really positive as I find it horse-friendly that we can ride the short Grand Prix. Of course, you have to get out there from the very first second and a single mistake can cause a huge drop in the marks, but I am really pleased with it. I think it is very fun to do something else. I find it fun.”

Judge at C, Hans-Christian Matthiesen congratulated the riders with some wonderful freestyle test. On the short Grand Prix he commented: “I look for the good flow in a test and in this test I found it. It makes the sport more exciting, but it is a tough test.”

The riders praised the organisation, and the quality of the venue and stabling – the friendliness of everybody involved was highly applauded by the riders.

Cathrine Dufour: “From a rider’s perspective, this is one of my favourites shows not only because it is on Danish soil – everything from the stables to the training areas. People are so friendly and always helpful. It is really a fantastic way to start the season.”

Dinja van Liere agreed with Dufour and commented: “I think this is a good first World Cup and really well organised. I think it puts a lot of pressure on the other shows to keep up with the high performance. It was very nice to be here, and I am going home with a wonderful feeling.”

Together with Casper Cassøe, Jens Trabjerg is the organiser of the World Cup Herning as well as the ECCO FEI World Championships 2022 in Herning. Jens Trabjerg states: “I would like to thank the amazing audience. The audience even stays for the prize giving ceremony. I hope that all of you riders have a note in your calendar in August next year for the Herning2022 World Championships.”

All three riders stated how they will aim for the FEI Dressage World Cup™ final in Leipzig, Germany in April.

The result of the first leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Herning:

  1. Cathrine Dufour (DEN) – Atterupgaards Cassidy 87,115%

  2. Carina Cassøe Krüth (DEN) – Heiline’s Danciera 86,395%

  3. Dinja van Liere (NED) – Hermes 84,360%

Only 14 contenders for first leg of FEI World Cup in Herning

The expectations for the Danish combinations were of course high as it was the Olympic girls back in the arena.

The short Grand Prix format suits the World Cup pretty well (when watching from the side line).

Cathrine Dufour and her 18 year old Atterupgaards Cassidy did their job. Cassidy looked fit even though they performed their trot half passes way under tempo like more of the other combinations also did. Dufour showed an effortless, high quality canter tour and not least what made the clear victory in Friday evenings World Cup Grand Prix an error free test.

Heiline´s Danciera and Carina Cassøe Krüth were on fire, more settled with stronger piaffe tours but unfortunately she like lost momentum just like out of the blue after the first five well performed flying changes and dropped into trot. Of course a very costly error - and yesterday it was actually the lost victory.

3rd placed was 9 year old Hermés with Dinja van Liere. This combination just shows a lot of surplus all the way, among the highlights were the trot half passes, power supple with super bending and uphill. Lovely frame and outline all the way with a nice contact, super quality for piaffe and passage and transition, for the canter tour two errors crept in. It was also their very first indoor show at Grand Prix level.

Other Danish combinations

Nanna Merrald and Blue Hors Zack showed a strong start, supple, fit and motivated Zack. During their test maybe a bit to motivated as he look pretty strong and for some moments he becomes a big stallion with a lady in the saddle. Unfortunately errors for both series.

Bufranco and Charlotte Heering is a very harmonious pair showing a lot of correct nice things, but for the piaffe and passage tours you could wish for a bit more power and expression. They showed an error free test.

Thranegaardens Rostov and Lone Bang with their World Cup debut. Technical strong performance, for the passage tours some tensions are showing hind, but overall a very nice debut and they also took the final placement for the World Cup Grand Prix.

Rock Star and Anna Kasprzak also showed a solid performance, for some moments Rock Star becomes narrow in the frame and the balance for the trot half passes is still a difficult task. A single error creeping into the two times.
