Germany makes winning twice as nice at Falsterbo

It was a narrow race for the 2024 FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ title heading into the final leg at Falsterbo (SWE), with Germany and Denmark separated by just two points.

But when it came time for the CDIO4* FEI Grand Prix test at the Falsterbo Horse Show, Germany didn't let the Danish get within 10 points of them. It was a convincing victory for the Germans on the day, which secured them a second consecutive series title.

Led by Chef d'Equpe Jonny Hilberath, the trio of Evelyn Eger (Tabledance 3), Helen Langehanenberg (Facilone Frh), and Carina Scholz (Tarantino 5) finished on a total score of 215.261. Denmark finished with a total score of 204.174, followed by The Netherlands (202.478).

"The result is very impressive. As a trainer and team captain, I'm very happy with the performance of my riders and of the horses, and for sure the results," Hilberath said.

"Everybody was riding in top form and with a lot of quality."

-Jonny Hilberath (GER)

Germany was the only team to have all three of its riders score above 70%, and in fact only one rider outside of Germany reached that threshold in the home nation's Tinne Vilhelmson Silfven (SWE), whose 70.000% was not quite enough to push Sweden up the leaderboard from fifth.

"It wasn't that easy [to select this team], because we had last week at Aachen (GER), and we are in preparation also for [the Olympic Games in] Paris," Hilberath shared. "Carina has been here already, last year with the team, and I was trying to collect riders which I could feature more with younger or newer horses. For example, Helen is riding a new horse, and I thought it was a very good show for her to perform internationally."

Langehanenberg and Facilone Frh finished the class on top with their 73.674%—a personal best for the combination. The 12-year-old was making just his second start at the FEI Grand Prix level.

"I was super happy. I've only been riding him since the beginning of this year, and we have not so many competitions together," Langehanenberg shared."I think the horse has a lot of potential for the future. There's maybe no weak side, but we have to improve and grow together.

"The test today felt like a big step forward. I was super happy, even without seeing the results. It felt great and maybe the beginning of some nice shows together."

-Helen Langehanenberg (GER)

The youngest rider on the team, Eger also brought forward the youngest horse in 11-year-old Tabledance 3. The pair also recorded a personal best score in the Grand Prix with their 70.413%. Scholz, meanwhile performed as strongly as ever with her 17-year-old partner Tarantino 5, who has successfully returned to top-level sport after sitting out nearly two years from international competition between July 2022 and April 2024.

"Carina had a very good ride. The horse is not a spring chicken anymore, and he's very sensitive. He's rather sharp, and she managed so well," Hilberath said. "The horse was doing wonderful, and he had a break. It's so nice to see the horse coming back better into the sport, and [Carina] is such a hard-working rider."

The weather wasn't ideal, either, with significant rainfall impacting the event. The event schedule was moved forward as a result, but competition forged forward in inclement weather.

"We are very grateful that we had such good conditions for the weather. I think the performances of the riders and the horses has been very good today because of [the efforts of the staff at the show] and of the good footing," Hilberath said.

Germany ultimately finished the Nations Cup series how they started it, having also won the opening leg at Wellington (USA) in February, with three different riders. The nation's final point tally from the four events is 42. Denmark and Sweden also replicated their finishes from last season, finishing second (38 points) and third (33), respectively.

18.000 euro top price filly by Blue Hors St. Schufro at Danish Warmblood auction Saturday evening but the foal market in general is bleeding

The great facilities at Blue Hors in Randbøl has recently changed management to the new Randbøl Dressage Academy which also were the hosts for Blue Hors Summer Auction Saturday evening.

As usual the facilities were immaculate and now with Dennis Fisker and his team it definitely look like the Blue Hors spirit will continue.

Top price foal at the auction went for 18.000 euro, where two local buyers were “fighting” for the top filly by Blue Hors St. Schufro / Revolution / Jazz out of a very strong dam line bred by Stutteri Midt-West.

16 foals under the hammer but only 44% sold

The current market at the auctions is very limited with buyers and it is also affected by the prices. From the pedigree the foals at Danish Warmblood auction were very attractive, but from the video presentation it was a bit difficult to find real highlights. All foals showed much better for the auction, but unfortunately only 44% of the foals were actually sold at the auction, and therefore it is even more important to get the right moments and as much as necessary (including walk on hard surface) for the promotion videos so that buyers from all over the world have the best basis for the decision.

Take a look around in Europe

From the big German auctions the trend from last year with significantly lower prices continues this year, together with the higher expences when breeding and raising up foals this means a current true negative curve.

When presenting a foal for an auction it is of course important for the breeders to get a good price, but said that it is also important to inform the breeders about the market, and when leaving an auction without a sale in the current market you might have to keep the foal until 3 yr old. Meaning that the minimum sales prices at the auction certainly has to be adjusted to the current market in order to actually get at sale.

Information to the breeders - no breeders no future for our sport

The most important part in our sport and breeding is the breeders, without breeders no future sport. Therefore the message is: “Keep breeding, maybe a at lower scale knowing that the prices are not attractive at the moment, but the demand for good foals and young horses will always be there.”

Instead of breeding ex 10 mares then just ex pick your 5 best mares, and take a look and ask around what is the demand from the riders. As a breeder you often have a very good “archive” of what your mares producing, or maybe you need new eyes as sparring.

In Denmark young Christian Springborg (CS Equestrian) recently started his own business also including “lets take a look among your mares”, in order to help breeders having new eyes on their stars and not least with unbiased advisory for the future breeding.

What is the future optimum horse for the sport?

For years the flashy power trot foals has been sold for very good prices at the auctions, no matter of the breeding.

It is still the foals with power trot selling at the auctions, but the riders and buyers are also getting more and more aware of what the sport is aiming for in order to produce easy rideable, trainable horses including three good basic gaits.

The goal anno 2025

2025 goal must be to produce a sport horse with light natural contact, good frame, in a relaxed body with natural self carriage for all three gaits and not least with good a temperament which can be managed also by an amateur.

CHIO Aachen 2024: Goosebump moments from Werth and Wendy in the Lindt-Prize

Press release

Isabell Werth had already eternalised her name 14-times on her “favourite board”, which is located at the entrance to the Main Stadium at the Soers. The fact that her 15th victory in the Grand Prix Freestyle, the Lindt-Prize, is really special, is among others because of her new four-legged dance partner, Wendy.

“Normally the Deutsche Bank Stadium calls up the Main Stadium because we are too loud. But this time it was extremely loud in the dressage arena as well,” joked Birgit Rosenberg, Head of Sport at the CHIO Aachen with a sidewards glance at the top three riders from the Lindt-Prize, the Grand Prix Freestyle on Sunday morning at the CHIO Aachen. Isabell Werth with Wendy, Frederic Wandres with Bluetooth and Ingrid Klimke with Franziskus were among those who rocked the sold-out Deutsche Bank Stadium today. First and foremost, Werth and Wendy.

The judges awarded an incredible score of 89.095 percent for the black mare’s performance. At championships that would be the sort of score that would pick up an individual medal. Wendy didn’t put a hoof wrong in her new freestyle routine, for which the text of Barry Manilow’s “Oh Mandy” had been changed into “Oh Wendy”. The crowd applauded nearly all of the riders as they turned onto the final centre line. But in the case of Werth and Wendy the fans went totally crazy, yelled and whistled. No sign of the sacred silence that usually prevails in dressage arenas, instead pure enthusiasm. Wendy stayed totally cool. As Isabell Werth reported: “She didn’t have a wet hair on her body when she went in, nor when she came out.” Regardless of the thunderous applause of the crowd, she kept in rhythm in piaffe and passage and then walked calmly to the exit, while Werth waved to the spectators, thanking them for the standing ovation. Definitely a special moment, even for the dressage rider, who has won everything there is to win.

“That was unbelievable for me too. Today was our day. We grow closer together day by day. Wendy was really totally cool, although it was so loud. She simply said: “Tell me what to do”, and then she did it. I have been here so many times, but today was the best day ever. It is a pleasure to be here.”

Second place went to Frederic Wandres with Bluetooth on a score of 83.010 percent. Yesterday, Isabell Werth, shook him out of his mental low with a strict “Pull yourself together!”, today everything went easier, according to Wandres. He was satisfied with his freestyle: “We had no technical mistakes, the walk line was fine, but I felt bit of tension. The technical mark was good, there is some room for improvement with the B mark. I was slightly behind the music here and there.” As far as Bluetooth is concerned, he was very happy: “We have been here a week and now today on Sunday he felt just as fresh and smooth as on Monday.”

Ingrid Klimke and Franziskus came third on 81.385 percent. There is an extended trot right at the start of her freestyle choreography, the great strength of “Franz”. Unfortunately, he broke into canter. “I risked a little too much and pushed him too much. I played it safe after that,” is how Klimke analysed the situation. Nevertheless, she was delighted to have been there today. “It is the first time that I have ridden the freestyle on the Sunday morning. The atmosphere is incredible! You could even hear the crowd during the warm-up. When you ride under the bridge into the stadium, it is a very special moment, and when you ride onto the final line to salute: “Aachen is simply unique. The crowd is so knowledgeable. They know what they see and want they want.”

Birgit Rosenberg could only agree: “We are just the ones, who prepare the stage. The rest is up to the horses and riders. Thank you for the beautiful dressage we have seen all week!”

CHIO Aachen 2024: Victory and personal best for Werth and Wendy in the MEGGLE-Prize

Winner of the MEGGLE-Prize, Isabell Werth, together with Marina Meggle, Deputy Chairwoman of the Board of the Toni Meggle Foundation, Dörthe Eichinger and ALRV President Stefanie Peters. (Photo: CHIO Aachen/Franziska Sack).

Press release

After winning the Grand Prix, Isabell Werth also notched up the victory in the Grand Prix Special, the MEGGLE-Prize at the CHIO Aachen 2024 – and also prove that she does a good job as a mental coach.

Isabell Werth and Wendy de Fontaine clearly dominated the Grand Prix Special, the MEGGLE-Prize after being awarded a score of 78.085 percent. That is a new personal best score for the ten-year-old, Danish-bred Sezuan daughter, who contested her fourth Spéciale with Werth. Only half a point separated the riders in second and third place. The head-to-head race in the ring went in favour of the Dutch rider, Dinja van Liere with her newcomer, Vita de Lusso, who with a score of 76.872 percent pipped Frederic Wandres with Bluetooth at the post (76.851). In points: the results were 1806.50 compared to 1806.0. It couldn’t have been closer.

Isabell Werth said about her ride today: “I must really say Wendy was fantastic today. We are growing together more and more. You can see it, you can feel it. It is a pleasure riding this horse. She always wants to give her best. It felt very harmonious today and I have the impression we are gradually becoming one unit.”

Dinja van Lieren’s Vita de Lusso is even younger than Wendy, just nine years old. Dinja van Liere has been riding him for three years. It is his first Grand Prix season and she was actually thinking about withdrawing from the Spéciale after coming fourth with him in the Grand Prix, the Prize of Family Tesch, because she didn’t think it could get much better. But: “My horse knocked me out today. He makes such quick progress. He was much better today than on Thursday. He gave me goosebumps today.” She reported that he too excels through his will to work and his go and that she is able to assert both to her advantage: “He relaxes more and more in the arena so that I actually get to ride rather than holding him back all the time. I am simply incredibly proud that I was able to fight my way up to the top between these strong German riders.”

Frederic Wandres was also highly satisfied with his and Bluetooth’s performance. For him this show was above all a challenge mentally. And the pressure was extremely high today. “It is not just about convincing the judges here, but also the dressage committee, that is selecting the team for the Olympic Games,” he explained. The CHIO Aachen is namely the final trial before the nominations for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Wandres added: “At some shows one is in the flow and one rides on the wave from the beginning to the end. But at this show I made mistakes with Duke (of Britain, his second Grand Prix horse) and then I took them with me when I rode Bluetooth. That threw me off course a little. Normally, my strength is being able to deliver immaculate tests constantly. And I lost my self-confidence a bit.” Three words from Isabell Werth got him back on course: “Pull yourself together!”

Impressive 96.800 debut for 6 yr old Danish Warmblood mare Quinn G & Charlotte Dujardin

Quinn G & Charlotte Dujardin during their winner performance at Hartpury - photo: screenshot Horse&Country TV

Successful debut

Charlotte Dujardin has recently taken over the reins from Carl Hester in direcction selection for World Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo.

Quinn G by Quaterhit / Fassbinder is bred by Danish Helene Geervliet, Stutteri G and owned by British international top rider Fiona Bigwood.

In 2023 Quinn G won World Champion 5 yr old horses with Danish Betina Jæger in the saddle. And now with Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin in the saddle they look like an obvious and clear pick representing Danish Warmblood in Ermelo beginning of September.

Yesterday they showed together for the first time in at national 6 yr old class (preliminary test) at Hartpury scoring impressive:

Trot 9,8 - walk 9,0 - canter 9,8 - submission 9,8 - perspective 10 = 96,800

From watching the performance at Horse & Country TV archive the scoring was spot on from British Richard Baldwin.

Well balanced trot, uphill, supple and active, super frame all the way, very nice walk clear beat, good over track, active with freedom, canter is big with every stride under the body, two clear flying changes with tiny tensions for the first change but still clear of the ground and on the aides, 2nd super balanced with power and clear big stride of the ground. Harmoni, contact, gaits, expression and abilities for a clear 10!

As Charlotte Dujardin stated after her ride: “I feel like there is so much more - she is incredible🥰.”
