The Dutch stallion competitions have been an integral part of the fact having an approved stallion in the Netherlands over the past several years.
If you look a little sharper into the concept, it is the combination of everybody getting the chance to follow the stallions development under saddle, even after they are elected and have passed their performance test, but also a somewhat outdated mandatory form of competition where all approved stallions MUST participate - at least 2 seasons.
The idea that one should be able to follow the stallions during their development under saddle, is of course more than welcome, but in 2017 it is certainly not the decisive factor for the stallions, whether they have been successful at the stallion competitions, as the breeder for sure will search for somewhat more nuanced informations before choosing a stallion for their mare. And the modern breeder is also looking for young stallions not just being a part of a pure stallion competition, but as a complete competition horse competing agaist horses a same age.
After following this years stallion competitions with a total of three preliminary competitions in Ermelo, Kronenberg and today in Zuidbroek, it just seems from the sideline like a kind of "political game" for the competitions.
A few comments on today's placements in Class M which again was won by Guardian S (recently new co-owners Sjef Jansen and Anky van Grunsven) with Kirsten Brouwer in the saddle, with 2 points lead down to no 2 Glock's Toto Jr with Marieke van der Putten in the saddle.
Glock's Toto Jr. with Marieke shows a super smooth and easy test, all the way in a nice uphill form, and with each step with pressure from behind, including an extraordinary high quality walk (9,0 trot - 9,5 walk - 9,0 canter - harmony 9,5 - potential 9,0), while Guardian S with Kirsten Brouwer does not go with the same natural power and the walk also becomes a bit unbalanced for the moments shown by shortened reins. (walk 9,0 - trot 9,5 - canter 9,5 - harmony 9,5 - potential 9,5).
In the same class was also among others Van Olst Horses stallion Glamourdale with Anna Blomgren Rogers in the saddle. A super nice and very harmonious combination, presented in a nice steady uphill frame, and a stallion with an extraordinary canter, which only scored 8.5 for canter and 8.5 for harmony and ends just outside the rankings.

How would we like to see the future stallions if the stallion competitions are outdated? And are the stallion competitions outdated?
