Årets hoppeføl 2019 Vilard's Frina e. Franklin / Sandro Hit - foto: Lonnie Nordstedt, Equine Photo.

VIDEO - Peters and Suppenkasper winner of CDI4 Grand Prix and debut for Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén with Devanto in CDI3 Grand Prix

Screen+Shot+2021-01-28+at+20.05.35.jpg

Strong technical performance from Steffen Peters with Suppenkasper in today’s CDI4 Grand Prix, even though the scores seemed very positive for the passage tours as they were mostly lacking more clear fluency.

For Kathrine Bateson Chandler and Alcazar some tensions crept in during the test, and unfortunately the trot half passes were lacking more forward flow and carriage.

Charlotte Jorst and Nintendo showed a good start, unfortunately error by the one times.

Debut for Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvën with Devanto in CDI3 Grand Prix

Tinne has brought her new Grand Prix horse Devanto, as she recently purchased from Germany Juliane Brunkhorst. They show a good trot tour, nice piaffe and passage tours with a bit forward flow but nice timing, bit limited walk tour, for the canter tour they still need more security together, as Tinne seems to rely a bit to much on Devanto and some small changes creeping in for the zigzag, and the same for the two times, while they lost the rhythm and balance for the one times.

Dalera storms to victory for von Bredow-Werndl in Salzburg

Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB led the German domination of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ 2020/2021 Western European League qualifier in Salzburg, Austria today (FEI/Lukasz Kowalski)

Defending champions Werth and Weihegold have to settle for second as Germans scoop top four placings

It has been a long wait since the first leg was staged last October, but the resumption of the 2020/2021 FEI Dressage World Cup™ Western European League didn’t disappoint when Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB swept to victory in Salzburg, Austria today.

In a cracker of a competition, the pair who helped claimed team gold at the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games™ threw down a superb performance when second-last to go in the field of 13. And their score of 87.960 ousted the partnership that have claimed the coveted FEI Dressage World Cup™ title on the last three occasions, Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD who had to settle for runner-up spot on their mark of 84.720.

Reminding the world that German dressage is in great shape, Helen Langehanenberg slotted into third with Annabelle when putting 81.340 on the board while Dorothee Schneider filled fourth place with Faustus when posting 80.650. Only one other horse-and-rider combination managed to break the 80 percent barrier, Swedish star Patrick Kittel steering Delaunay OLD into fifth on a mark of 80.125.

Halfway stage

It was another Swedish pair who held the lead at the halfway stage, Antonia Ramel and Brother de Jeu who were on the bronze medal winning side along with Kittel and Well Done de la Roche at the 2019 FEI European Championships in Rotterdam (NED).

Ramel produced a lovely test from the 15-year-old gelding to score 77.460 today but, third to go after the break, Werth moved things on to a completely different level when scoring more than seven percent higher. And when both compatriot Langehanenberg and then Kittel couldn’t get close to bettering that, it seemed the writing was already on the wall.

But von Bredow-Werndl had other ideas.

“I was really ready for it today because Dalera already felt amazing yesterday”, she pointed out. In Saturday’s Grand Prix she finished second to Werth, but that didn’t blunt her ambitions.

“I came in today with the hope to win! We had a very stupid mistake yesterday when she fell into trot before the one-tempis because she thought it was already the last line for the extended trot, and that was more than expensive because the one-tempis count double. Today I knew if we got things right then we had a really good chance!”

And they got it absolutely right, the 34-year-old rider and her 14-year-old mare nailing it with a superb test that secured pole position by more than three percentage points over Werth who may not have been all that surprised, as she clearly wasn’t happy with her own performance, shaking her head as she left the arena.

Today’s winning partnership had already beaten Werth and Weihegold twice before - at the FEI Dressage World Cup™ qualifier in Stuttgart (GER) in 2019 and at last year’s German Championships. Werth knew perfectly well that she needed a mistake-free test to keep the pressure on her fellow-countrywoman who is always a strong challenger, so when she didn’t get that she was always going to be vulnerable.

Season

Instead of a full season of qualifiers, the Western European League has been severely curtailed by the effects of the pandemic, and today’s leg at Salzburg was only the second in the lead-up to the 2021 Final which is scheduled for Gothenburg (SWE) from 31 March to 4 April. In this virus-ridden era it is difficult to predict anything anymore, but another qualifier is planned for ’s-Hertogenbosch (NED) in March and under the revised qualifying criteria the best two results from the Western European and Central European Leagues will count towards qualification.

Today’s result leaves von Bredow-Werndl at the top of the qualification table with Langehanenberg in second, Kittel in third, Morgan Barbancon from France in fourth and The Netherlands’ Thamar Zweistra and Ireland’s Anna Merveldt sharing fifth place.  Austria’s Christian Schumach lies seventh while Denmark’s Carina Cassoe Kruth, who collected eight points when finishing tenth today with Heiline’s Danciera, is in eighth place. A total of nine athletes will make the cut to the Final and Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour, who won the opening leg on home ground at Aarhus last October, at this stage shares that ninth spot with Germany’s Benjamin Werndl.

Environment

As von Bredow-Werndl pointed out today it’s not an easy environment for either horses or riders these days.

“Dalera was a bit nervous yesterday but I have to admit I was too! I realise now that it is too long for me to have a competition break for over three months - I really need to compete and so do the horses. Riding the test at home and going to a competition are two completely different things.

"You need to measure yourself against the other competitors, and it’s a more honest way to look in the mirror if you do it at a competition"

Jessica von Bredow-Werndl (GER)

She complimented Show Director Josef Goellner and his team for staging the Austrian event in such a difficult times. The show is taking place without spectators and with rigorous restrictions. “I’m so grateful that the organisers managed to do such a great job and that it was perfectly organised. Everyone feels safe here, everyone is wearing a mask and there is hand sanitiser everywhere - it’s strange, but I’m so glad to be here!”, she said.

She would like to compete in ’s-Hertogenbosch, but brotherly love may get in the way of that. “I want my brother (Benjamin Werndl) to have a chance to go there because he already won one qualifier (at Zakrzow, Poland in October) and he needs to go to another one, and there are usually only four Germans allowed to ride”, she explained.

When it comes to the Final in Gothenburg however, nothing will hold her back. “Oh yes, I’ll be going there for sure - and with all guns blazing!”, she said.

No rusty moments in today’s World Cup Grand Prix from Salzburg

Today’s starter field were all showing motivated, fresh and well prepared horses.

Weihegold / Isabell Werth - Not really steady halt, medium trot at diagonal, good flow half passes, good halt with rein back, limited diagonal, super into passage, fire on the ground passage, super into piaffe, active with smooth transitions, good extended walk, good collected walk, good into passage, need bit more sit for piaffe, good transition to canter, nice 2 times, good extended canter, good zigzag, nice 1 times, super sit and control for pirouettes tiny with top class, good into trot, conservative diagonal, super power final centerline, open halt.

“Light rising trot extension”

+80% again for Werth and Weihegold, but this time with kind of new Grand Prix exercise. “Light rising trot extension”, as seen from the first diagonal with 6-7 times light rising trot from Werth, like the diagonal after rein back with 10 light rising trot steps. From the detailed score board non of the judges seems to consider any deduction for this “exercise”.

Dalera BB / Jessica von Bredow-Werndl - Good halt, expressive balanced diagonal, nice crossing uphill half passes, super halt with rein back, power diagonal, smooth into active from hind passage, lovely picture in piaffe easy in and out, relaxed forward flow extended walk tour, good collected walk, nice into passage, super piaffe tiny unbalance out, nice transition to canter, good 2 times, power extended canter and with change at diagonal, bit unbalanced zigzag, trot into diagonal for 1 times, tense 1 times, well balanced pirouettes, good into trot, power diagonal with expression, small tension hind piaffe, super passage and transitions, good halt.

Delaunay / Patrik Kittel - Bit open halt, good diagonal, lack bit carriage for half pass right, better left, bit early halt for rein back, good diagonal, nice into passage, active piaffe, good passage, bit short extended walk active, good collected walk, nice into passage, good piaffe, nice out into passage, good transition to canter, nice 2 times lack bit uphill final half, nice extended, good zigzag, nice 1 times need bit more uphill, nice control and quality for both pirouettes, good into trot, good diagonal, active final centerline, super halt.

Chasing important World Cup point

For every combination this year is a pure run for enough points to qualify for the finals, and as the current schedule tells there will only be one more qualifier before the planned finals in Gothenburg in April.

One of the combinations aiming for the final is Danish Carina Cassøe Krüth with her 10 year old Fürstenball daughter Heiline´s Danciera, and at the same time collecting valuable international experience as they are one of the Danish long list combinations for the Olympics in Tokyo.

“Danciera was very impressed by the arena today, and it obviously gave us some challenges as she was not fully focused on me all the way. Missing the clear transition for our first passage, 2 x error for our 2 times and a small error by the zigzag. Actually the final piaffe tour today was our best where she really gave a great feeling. We just have to step up for tomorrow´s freestyle hopefully with full focus on each other. I really look forward performing our freestyle,” tells Carina after today’s World Cup Grand Prix.

🇩🇰Heiline´s Danciera / Carina Cassøe Krüth - Good halt, direct into trot, power expressive diagonal, super side picture, supple half passes uphill, bit open halt bit unbalanced rein back, super diagonal, lost transition to passage, nice passage, bit forward piaffe active nice out into passage again, super extended walk with relaxation, active collected walk, nice into passage, good 2nd piaffe bit forward, nice transitions, nice into canter, error 2 times x 2 with extra 1 times, good extended canter, small tension hind zigzag, nice 1 times, lovely sit with quality canter for both pirouettes, nice into trot, power balanced diagonal, power supple final centerline, nice halt. Placed 7 with 72,804%

Werth, Waldmann, Neumeyer and Merrald

Werth showed once again a winner performance with DSP Quantaz and today with same power and expressive performance but clearly more by his rider.

DSP Quantaz / Isabell Werth - Nice halt, expressive diagonal, nice uphill flow half pass left, lack clear flow into first passage transition, nice passage, nice transitions, good flow for extension, small adjust for half pass right, super nice passage with lovely suspension, nice transition to walk, bit limited extended walk tour, nice collected walk good 1st piaffe, bit tension 2nd piaffe and clearly pat from Werth, good transition to canter, lovely well balanced canter half passes, nice 2 times over full diagonal, good 1 times, power extended canter, well controlled pirouettes, error 1 times, bit stocked transition to trot, power extension, super nice final centerline, open halt.

Fiderdance / Lena Waldmann - Good halt, good extension bit running picture, good crossing active half pass left, good transition to passage, could show more push and lift for more expression, nice transition and super extension, better balance for half right lacking bit more bending, good passage/extensions, good into walk, nice relaxed extended walk, good collected walk, nice 1st piaffe and transition out, need a bit more foreward search for 2nd piaffe, good into canter, good canter half passes, good series, power risk extension, super nice 1st pirouette, bit swinging 1 times, tiny well balanced 2nd pirouette, power extended trot, good centerline, lack bit more go for piaffe, nice halt.

Placed 3rd today was another debut combination 13 year old Danish Warmblood gelding Zap Zap by Blue Hors Zack. / Leonardo II bred by Morten Thomsen and ridden by Austria Astrid Neumeyer. They showed a strong well managed test together.

Another successful debut test for 🇩🇰Danish Nanna Merrald with Atterupgaards Orthilia

Orthilia was fully focused together with a sharp Nanna Merrald showing another clean quality test today - their first ever Grand Prix Special test together.

“It´s been a great and successful experience together with Orthilia here in Austria. She is very easy to bring to a show, happy and relaxed in the stable. I’m also very thankful that my long time trainer Michael Søgaard was here to support me by the training and warm up - it means a world to me. I really feel motivated to join the next show together with Orthilia, tells Nanna.

Atterupgaards Orthilia / Nanna Merrald - Nice halt, light power diagonal, well balanced half pass left, good into passage, regular, good extensions and back again, nice half pass right, good into passage with smooth transitions, good extended walk lacking bit more active forward search, bit tense before piaffe, good 1st piaffe, good 2nd piaffe small disturb, lack bit final passage before transition to canter, good canter half passes, super nice 2 times, nice bit early finished 1 times, nice extended canter, good quality pirouettes bit big, nice 1 times, good into trot, nice extension long side, super nice final centerline.

German big guns out in force

Reigning five-time series champion and World No. 1, Germany’s Isabell Werth, heads the sparkling start-list for the FEI Dressage World Cup™ qualifier in Salzburg, Austria this weekend.

She will partner Weihegold OLD, the 16-year-old mare with which she claimed the prestigious title at the last three Finals, in Omaha (USA) in 2017, Paris (FRA) in 2017 and Gothenburg (SWE) in 2019.

And the German challenge will be mighty one, as Werth is joined by compatriots Jessica von Bredow-Werndl who holds the World No. 3 spot and Olympians Dorothee Schneider and Helen Langehanenberg.

Only one other leg of the 2020/2021 Western European League qualifying series has taken place so far, at Aarhus in Denmark in October where the host nation’s Cathrine Dufour and Bohemian came out on top.

The Covid-19 pandemic has played havoc with the sporting calendar worldwide for almost a year now, but there is great excitement about the resumption of the prestigious FEI Dressage World Cup™ series that is now in its 36th season - the 35th cut short by effect of the virus.

10 nations

A total of 14 athletes from 10 nations will compete this weekend including Swedish showman Patrick Kittel with Delaunay OLD, the 15-year-old gelding with which he finished sixth at the 2018/2019 Final on home ground in Gothenburg. And also flying the Swedish flag will be Antonia Ramel and Brother de Jeu who, alongside Kittel and Well Done de la Roche, helped claimed team bronze at the 2019 FEI European Dressage Championships in Rotterdam (NED).

Anna Merveldt and her 12-year-old Lusitano gelding Esporim went into the history books when helping Ireland to Olympic qualification in Dressage for the very first time at those Rotterdam Championships, and they come to Salzburg with some strong recent results. They were runners-up behind the French duo of Morgan Barbançon and the 15-year-old stallion Sir Donnerhall ll OLD in the Freestyle at Budapest-Fót (HUN) in October where the French pair, who will be back in the ring this weekend, also dominated the Grand Prix.

Germany’s von Bredow-Werndl brings the horse with which she holds that No. 3 spot in the World Rankings, the 14-year-old Trakehner mare TSF Dalera BB. Schneider will partner the 13-year-old gelding Faustus who won the CDI4* Grand Prix Special at Oldenburg (GER) in November and Langehanenberg will ride the 13-year-old mare Annabelle which won the CDI3* Grand Prix Special at Aarhus last October.

Represented

The Netherlands will be represented by Thamar Zweistra and the 13-year-old stallion Hexagon’s Double Dutch who finished third in the Grand Prix and Freestyle at the CDI-W fixtures in both Mariakalnok (HUN) last June and at Pilisjászfalu (HUN) in August 2020.

Italy’s Francesco Zaza (Wispering Romance), Denmark’s Carina Cassoe Kruth (Heiline’s Danciera), Belgium’s Simon Missiaen (Charlie), Australia’s Simone Pearce (Destano) and Austria’s Franziska Fries (Atomic) are also in the mix. So it is going to be a truly international cast that takes centre-stage at the Messezentrum Arena in the city so closely associated with both revered composer, Mozart, and the much-loved 1965 film “The Sound of Music”.

The FEI World Cup™ Dressage Grand Prix is scheduled for 08.00 local time on Saturday 23 January, while the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Freestyle will take place on Sunday 24 January starting at 11.00.

First victory for Werth in 2021 and super international debut for Danish Nanna Merrald with Atterupgaards Orthilia

Werth sharp as usual this time with DSP Quantaz, Fiderdance and Waldmann with a consistant quality test and super debut for Blue Hors rider Nanna Merrald with Atterupgaards Orthilia.

All riders with helmet

Even though Werth was not a fan of the mandatory use of helmet rule from 1st January, it was a brilliant look. DSP Quantaz is a typical Quaterback power horse and he suits Werth perfectly and gives an impressive overall picture with today’s convincing 78% winner test today.

Lena Waldmann showed Fiderdance in a very nice contact, for some moments a bit high in the neck but easy and effortless overall picture.

International debut placement for 🇩🇰Danish Nanna Merrald with former British Olympic team horse Atterupgaards Orthilia, now 16 year old, bred by Stud Atterupgaard. Nanna recently took over the ride from owner Agnete Kirk Thinggaard, and judged from today’s debut performance this new combination has something to offer for the future. Atterupgaards Orthilia has not been at start since October 2018, and Agnete Kirk Thinggaard only did three international shows with the mare.

Nanna and Orthilia showed a very harmonious picture with an error free secure test. After the test Nanna was of course very pleased. “Our test went as planned as the main goal was an error free test and therefore of course also a bit conservative test, and I’m very happy to back at the international scene with such a top quality horse,” tells Nanna Merrald.

DSP Quantaz / Isabell Werth Good halt, he is ready, power balanced diagonal, super crossing supple half passes uphill, bit early super halt with good rein back, good diagonal, nice into passage, super piaffe at the spot active off the ground, nice transitions, bit short not 100% balanced extended walk, bit tense collected walk, nice into passage, nice piaffe and nice transitions, good into canter, nice 2 times bit tension, power diagonal with expression, error end zigzag, super nice 1 times power and lovely through from behind, sit and control for pirouettes super quality, expressive diagonal, sharp power final centerline, nice halt.

Fiderdance / Lena Waldmann Super halt, expressive diagonal, lovely crossing go and flow for both half passes, nice halt with nice rein back, good power diagonal, nice into passage, easy light piaffe steps lack bit clear transition out, good relaxation for extended walk, good collected walk, good passage, nice piaffe and good transition lack a bit power out, nice 2 times good flow forward and supple hind, power diagonal nice transition before letter, quick and easy zigzag, good 1 times clear riders aides, well balanced pirouettes with super nice quality, lack clear flow into trot transition, power diagonal, easy final centerline.

Atterupgaards Orthilia / Nanna Merrald Good halt, expressive balanced diagonal, good half passes lack bit more go, bit open halt nice rein back, good diagonal, nice into passage, good piaffe lack bit more activity nice sit, good transitions, good relaxation for extended walk with good over track, nice collected walk, good into passage, better activity for 2nd piaffe, nice passage and good transition, good into canter, nice control for 2 times, good power diagonal extended canter, well balanced zigzag, super nice 1 times, nice preparation for pirouette, super sit and control, 2nd tiny and super quality, nice into trot, super balanced diagonal, super smooth diagonal. Super international debut!
